How Lunar Age Works
Chinese / Lunar Age vs Western Age
๐น At birth, Chinese age = 1 (not 0).
๐น Age increases by 1 on the Lunar New Year (spring festival), NOT on your birthday.
๐น Lunar Age = (current lunar year - birth lunar year) + 1.
๐น Example: Baby born one day before Lunar New Year becomes 2 years old on the next day!

Lunar New Year
Usually between Jan 21 and Feb 20. Everyone adds one year to their Chinese age.
Cultural Use
East Asian age reckoning is used for traditional ceremonies, fortune telling, and some zodiac calculations.
Zodiac Elements
Each year also has an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) that rotates every 2 years.
FAQs
How is Chinese lunar age different from Western age?+
Western age counts from 0 at birth and increases on birthday. Chinese lunar age counts from 1 at birth and increases on Lunar New Year. So it can be 1–2 years older than Western age.
What is my lunar birthday?+
Your lunar birthday is the anniversary of your birth in the lunisolar calendar. It falls on a different Gregorian date each year (usually 2–3 weeks earlier). Many traditional celebrations use the lunar date.
Does the calculator account for leap lunar months?+
Yes, the Lunar library accurately handles intercalary months in the Chinese calendar. If you were born in a leap month, the birthday occurs on the same leap month every 19 years.
What is my Korean / East Asian age?+
Traditional Korean age is the same as Chinese lunar age (1 at birth, +1 on Lunar New Year). Some countries now use Western age officially but keep traditional for cultural events.
