๐ How HRA Exemption Works
- HRA exemption = Least of the following three:
- A. Actual HRA received from employer
- B. Rent paid – 10% of salary (Basic + DA)
- C. 50% of salary (for Metro cities) or 40% of salary (for Non-Metro)
- Salary for HRA purpose = Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (if part of retirement benefits).
- If you live in a rented house and receive HRA, this exemption reduces your taxable income.
- Rent paid must be more than 10% of salary to claim any exemption.
